I’m a bit surprised it took me a month to stumble upon this. I like Raíz and their crew/label, Droid Behavior, quite a bit, and they seem to have a close relationship with Pandemic’s west coast cousins Das Bunker. Recorded live at DB’s retro night last year, it’s a flawlessly mixed set of excellent and often underrated tracks that flirts with industrial’s influences as much as its history.
As their contract has expired with Mute Records, Throbbing Gristle has purchased all of the Industrial Records warehouse stock and will now be distributing it through their own label again. Industrial Records will also be releasing a final Throbbing Gristle album, titled Desertshore.
We’re all excited about Pandemic on Friday, but on Saturday, there’s another event you might all be interested in (I know quite a few Pandemic djs will be there). To give you an idea why it’s relevant to a bunch of rivetheads, I’ll just quote Surgeon’s wikipedia page:
Surgeon’s musical style is characterised by his incorporation of the more cinematic and left field aspects of his musical background into his club-based material. His production, remix, and DJ repertoire are inspired by krautrock and industrial music bands such as Faust, Coil, and Whitehouse. In particular, the extent of Coil’s influence is such that most of the track titles from Surgeon’s Tresor album “Force and Form” are direct references to Coil recordings. Child also draws influence from Chicago house, Techno, Dub music, and Electro, and also from non-musical works by Mike Leigh, David Lynch, William S. Burroughs, Bret Easton Ellis, and Cindy Sherman.
Yeah…hell, *I* don’t even play Whitehouse in my sets. I’m a big fan of his FACT magazine podcast from last year, recorded live and including his own cover of Nitzer Ebb’s “Join In The Chant”. I can’t wait to hear what he does on Saturday.
In addition to our regular Pandemic on April 1, Pandemic will be doing a showcase on the lower level of Abbey Pub as part of Kompute’s HI-FI event series.
Kompute will fill the upper level with a solid lineup of techno djs, including myself [I am conveniently a member of both Pandemic and Kompute], while we put JenaMax, Pathogen, Kriegschrei, and Cytokine downstairs for all the industrial you can handle. I’ve been preaching about the cross-pollination of techno and industrial for a long time, so I’m pretty excited about this. In recent years, I’ve found so much similarity between the two, and so few people aware of it. This is a great opportunity to open ears to great music they might not otherwise be exposed to.

Thanks to Metropolis Records, Faderhead, Matt Fanale, the Pandemic DJs, Jeff Moyer, Syed and Nikki at Funk, the Exit staff, Carlos, Erick, Jessie, Cecily, Melissa, Chris, Matt, Brian, and everyone who comes out to dance and have fun with us at all of our events.
There’s been something brewing in techno lately… it’s, um, industrial. Thanks to the likes of djs like Surgeon, Perc, Sawf, and The Hacker, industrial is making a comeback in the spaces between techno’s harsher tracks, and it sounds right at home. The best recent example of this is Perc’s latest Resident Advisor podcast, steeped in British industrial that doesn’t sound as old as it is. I highly recommend it.
Come be part of Chicago’s industrial evolution. Pandemic invades Exit once again in November, bringing you the finest in classic and modern industrial, EBM, synthpop and rhythmic noise.
